A bolt is a fastener which has some threaded shafts. These have a close connection with screws which also have threads. A bolt is generally made up of a metal, having a head at one end and chamfer at the other end and its shaft has ridges known as threads. These are used to hold materials together and to position objects.
Nowadays, steel bolts are used frequently. They can also be galvanized to resist corrosion. There are a lot of options in bolts that can be chosen depending on the requirements or the materials involved.
The most common types of bolts include :
ANCHOR BOLTS
These are used in concrete to connect structural as well the non-structural elements. The connection can be formed using different components such as anchor bolts, stiffeners or the steel plates. These transmit different types of loads including shear forces and tensile forces. These are fixed in masonry for different structural applications.
BLIND BOLTS
Such types of bolts provide greater strength than a typical bolt. These are mainly used to create a strong connection where the traditional bolts and rivets fail to do the job or there are problems regarding assembling them.
These bolts are given priority when there is any type of work related to repair work, maintenance and manufacturing. These are termed as blind bolts because these are installed from only one side of the joint.
CARRIAGE BOLT
Carriage bolts are used to fasten the metal to other metal. Moreover, these are also used for fastening metal to wood. It is different from other bolts because it has a mushroom head and a square shank. They get their name from the fact that they were used to connect different carriages in the 19th century.
FLANGE BOLT
Flange bolts are also termed as frame bolts. These bolts are provided with a circular flange which helps in distribution of load. They are typically non-serrated. They are used to secure the outside casing that protects the transmission and engine. Flange bolts also find an application in the automotive industry.
HULL BOLTS
Some of the hull bolts have tops which are square-shaped. The rest of them have a dome shaped design. These also turn out to be ideal for heavy-duty applications such as industrial machinery.
ARBOR BOLT
These are designed for usage in the power tools. Such bolts keep the blade in place and hold the tool securely. These bolts have a washer attached to them which gives them a distinctive appearance. They are made with a dark finish.
These are also made with reverse threads which are really important and are a part of the main function of the arbor bolts.
HEX BOLT
Hex bolts have a hexagonal head which is used for tightening the fastener. These are widely used in machine parts, construction and maintenance repairs. Hex bolts are manufactured in a lot of shapes, sizes, finishes, qualities and materials depending on the application.
MACHINE BOLT
These are similar to hex bolts except that these do not have a chamfered point. These are available with a hexagonal as well as a square head.
SHOULDER BOLT
It has a shank with a large diameter that is provided just below the head. There is a change in diameter just below the head. It can be used along with some sliding bearings to enhance the rotation between the different parts. These bolts are really versatile and are available in a variety of configurations to suit different materials and requirements of strength. Different thread configurations and combinations result in bolts with different functions that can be used. You can explore different types of bolts at Bhavya Industries.
